Heat leads to more accidents. Footwear is also partly to blame.
After a quick dip in the cool water, you should urgently consider whether it is wise to get into the car with flip-flops, sandals, or even barefoot and drive home. The ÖAMTC warns against this and the legal consequences.
Chief car instructor Roland Frisch says light footwear can get caught on the pedals, and many people slip on the slippery soles and are unable to brake in time.
It can’t hurt to keep shoes suitable for driving in the trunk. It is not forbidden to wear flip-flops when driving. However, if the wrong footwear causes an accident, there is a risk of legal trouble. The insurance company will then also cover you.
Experts from Statistics Austria and Geosphere found that heat also increases the likelihood of accidents. Since 2019, most accidents, partly caused by motorcycle rides, have occurred in the warm months. Vienna is no exception. In 2023, 16.5 accidents occurred daily in the Austrian capital. On days with more than 30 degrees, it was 17.2, and on cooler days, it was “only” 16. The reasons are a lack of concentration and fatigue due to sleep deprivation. And possibly also the wrong footwear.
